Special Donation Kicks Off “Giving Tuesday” for Toni’s Kitchen

Giving Tuesday energizes us to donate funds to make our community healthier and stronger.  At Toni’s Kitchen, these funds will carry our programs forward in 2019.

Today, we thought we’d reflect on one of the particularly inspiring donations we received at Toni’s Kitchen this year and the impact it has on our work.  It came from our dear friend, Noah Weinberg.

Noah received the very prestigious Dr. Peter R. Greer Award at the end of his 8th grade year in June.  This award recognizes one student in the Montclair Kimberley Academy graduating class who has demonstrated outstanding character.  Noah had thought about this award each year during middle school.  What he didn’t expect to hear was the inspiring reflections of his teachers followed by his own name announced as the recipient!

After the ceremony Noah took thoughtful steps that reflect one of the many reasons he was so deserving of this recognition.  Noah has been volunteering with his family at Toni’s Kitchen since he was 11.  He has a deep connection with Toni’s mission and a commitment to seeing that hunger is addressed.  Noah decided to donate the $500 that came with the award to Toni’s Kitchen.  He asked that the matching grant associated with the award be donated to Toni’s as well.  Amazing!

When the donation was made, Noah was asked if he had a favorite program where he would like to see the donation directed.  “My favorite program is the Healthy Backpack Program,” Noah responded after consideration.  “But I think it’s important for the money to go where it is needed most.”

Noah’s donation, with the generosity of so many others, allowed Toni’s Kitchen to have its biggest impact ever in 2018: over 180,000 healthy meals in our community; 35,000 summer meals that kept our kids growing while school was out; and weekly support to 250 low-income families through our Healthy Backpack Program.  We join Noah in his commitment to seeing that we live in a community where food needs are truly met.

We share this story on #GivingTuesday to recognize that giving makes a tangible impact on our community.  Giving also inspires us to live into the example set by Noah and by others in our community to think first about the needs of others and take practical steps – big and small – to improve the lives of our neighbors.

Please give generously on #GivingTuesday and ensure everyone in our community has reliable access to healthy food.  Donations received prior to 12/31/18 will be matched by the Partners For Health Foundation Holiday Matching Grant Program.  Click here to donate!
